We cover the chains you are most likely to come across. From the big names you will find on almost every corner to smaller ones that are worth knowing about, but do keep in mind that they are not interchangeable.
Some supermarkets on this list are dense across the whole city and make good everyday shops, while others sit mainly in certain neighbourhoods or out towards the edges of Belgrade.
What a store stocks also depends on its size, so a large hypermarket carries far more than a small neighbourhood branch of the same chain. If a specific product matters to you, aim for the bigger format.
To make chains easy to compare, we cover each one the same way, looking at the things that actually matter when you are shopping plant-based:

Maxi
Maxi is the largest retail chain in Belgrade with more than 350 of their stores. It runs three formats: Maxi (neighbourhood supermarkets), Mega Maxi (hypermarkets), and Shop&Go (small convenience stores). In Belgrade, Maxi and Shop&Go stores are present in essentially every neighbourhood, central and suburban. This is the easiest chain to find in the city.

Fresh fruit and vegetables at Maxi
Maxi is recognized for a wide range and high quality of fresh products (fruits, vegetables and bakery). The offer follows the seasons, so you will find seasonal fruit and vegetables alongside a solid range of year-round staples. Larger Maxi and Mega Maxi stores have extensive produce sections, while Shop&Go convenience stores carry a smaller selection.
Tofu and plant staples at Maxi
Usually available but also limited to a few items, mainly in larger stores. Legumes and dried pulses are widely stocked, but dedicated tofu variety is thin compared to specialist shops. Hummus (e.g. Carnex, Argeta, Ribella) is available.
Dairy alternatives at Maxi
Maxi has a dedicated “plant milk shelf category. Brands include Alpro, Imlek, Joya, Olympus for soya/almond/oat/rice/coconut drinks and desserts; Violife vegan cheese (slices, blocks, cream spreads). Delhaize’s own “Nature’s Promise Free From” line covers lactose- and gluten-free products.
Meat alternatives at Maxi
The meat alternatives offer at Maxi is a bit of a moving target right now. Stock comes and goes, and what is on the shelf one week is not always there the next, so we have chosen not to point you towards specific products that might not actually be available when you visit. If you are after mock meats, the larger Maxi and Mega Maxi stores are your best bet, and it is worth checking the online shop to see what is in stock before you make the trip.
Vegan desserts and snacks at Maxi
Vegan options include many delicious treats, such as Deli Cata dark chocolate, different kinds of wafers, Boom Box oat crackers, and Alpro plant-based desserts. Vegan-labelled biscuits and sweets sit throughout regular aisles.
Apps and discounts
Maxi Online is a free loyalty app for iOS and Android. It offers weekly discounted products, personalized promotions, digital stickers/vouchers, self-selected discount items, digital receipts, and pre-order/pickup for some items.
Maxi also runs an online shop with home delivery. It is generally the most-recommended and most-trusted chain, seen as a solid balance of price and quality, with the best fresh assortment and strong promotions.
IDEA
IDEA is the second major grocery group in Belgrade. Per their official breakdown, it operates at over 300 shops, supermarkets and hypermarkets. Formats include: Idea (everyday neighbourhood supermarkets), Idea Super (larger), Idea Organic (organic-only stores, present in Belgrade), Roda (megamarkets), and Mercator hypermarkets (a large one on Novi Beograd). Roda megamarkets are being progressively rebranded to Idea. Idea and Maxi are the two convenience networks you’ll “always have one or the other” nearby in Belgrade.

Fresh fruit and vegetables at IDEA
Good fresh assortment; Idea markets emphasize daily-fresh delivery. Idea Organic stores carry organic fruit & vegetables sold loose, plus other bulk organic products.
Tofu and plant staples at IDEA
Idea Organic is where this group really comes into its own. It brings plant staples together with organic, gluten-free, dietetic, macrobiotic, and posno products, all under one roof, which makes it a genuinely useful stop if you are stocking a plant-based kitchen. Standard Idea stores are smaller neighbourhood shops built around everyday groceries, so they carry a more limited plant range. It is there, just don’t expect the same depth you get at a dedicated Idea Organic store.
Dairy alternatives at IDEA
Major brands (Alpro, Joya, Boom box) are standard across Serbian chains and available via Idea’s network. Vegan Gourmet as well as Gusto cheeses might be available at some stores. Idea also runs an online shop and Idea Organic is available via delivery apps in Belgrade.
Meat alternatives at IDEA
As with Maxi, the meat alternatives offer at Idea is unreliable at the moment. Stock shifts often, and what you find in one store or one week won’t necessarily be there the next. We would rather not list specific products that might let down a visitor who turns up expecting them. We will keep this post updated as the situation settles, but for now the honest answer is to check the larger Idea stores and the online shop to see what is actually in stock.
Vegan desserts and snacks at IDEA
Sweets are one of the easier things to shop plant-based at Idea, mostly thanks to the wide range of posno-labelled treats stocked throughout the aisles. On Idea’s own online shop you will find posno biscuits and wafers from familiar Serbian brands such as Štark, alongside dark chocolate and other posno confectionery that happens to be free of dairy and eggs. As always with the posno label, it is worth a quick glance at the ingredients, since it can occasionally include honey, but for everyday sweets and snacks the selection is dependable.
Apps and discounts
“Super Kartica” is a shared loyalty app for Idea, Roda and Mercator (both on iOS/Android), with in-app coupons, challenges for bonus points, partner offers etc.
Idea is positioned as modern/innovative and everyday-focused; with prices comparable to Maxi. Idea Organic gives the group a genuine edge for health-conscious and vegan shoppers.
Lidl
Lidl entered Serbia in 2018, and per their official press release there are currently over 75 stores in Serbia. Lidl has a single discount-store format.
In Belgrade, they are present in multiple locations but way less dense than Maxi/Idea. Stores tend to be larger-footprint with parking, often on arterial roads rather than in every neighbourhood.

Solid fresh produce, bakery and seasonal ranges; quality generally well-reviewed. Range rotates with weekly promotions. For some shoppers this is their go-to for fruit and vegetables, and the salads and greens in particular are an honest recommendation from us.
Tofu and plant staples at Lidl
Lidl’s Vemondo own-brand line includes vegan schnitzels, spreads and other plant staples; tofu and falafel appear in the assortment. Over 30 Vemondo/Free From products became part of the permanent assortment, displayed alongside the BIO range.
Dairy alternatives at Lidl
Vemondo plant-based drinks and vegan ice cream; Alpro also available.
Meat alternatives at Lidl
Vemondo vegan schnitzels, vegan lasagne and other plant-based ready items; assortment expands during promotional weeks.
Vegan desserts and snacks at Lidl
Vemondo vegan chocolates, donuts (Lidl bakery), vegan ice cream and gluten-free salty snacks. This only scratches the surface, though, as plenty more turns up between the regular aisles once you start reading labels.
Apps and discounts
“Lidl Plus” is a free digital loyalty card (works on iOS/Android). Weekly exclusive coupons, automatic scan-at-checkout discounts, scratch card bonus coupons, digital receipts and the digital weekly flyer. Works across countries.
Lidl is considered to be Serbia’s only true discounter, even though theocal opinion is that Lidl in Serbia is not dramatically cheaper than rivals (unlike Lidl elsewhere in Europe). It is however valued for German own-brand quality and its consistent Vemondo vegan line, which was well-received in local taste tests.
Univerexport
With over 210 stores nationally, Univerexport also has a meaningful Belgrade presence (locations across Stari Grad, Palilula, Zvezdara, Vračar, Novi Beograd, Bežanijska kosa), but less dense than Maxi/Idea. Formats include wholesale, supermarkets, markets, mini-markets.

This is a recognized strength for Univerexport, as they are often praised for their fresh fruit & vegetable offer, with dedicated produce sections. Has its own organic production under the “Organa” brand.
Tofu and plant staples at Univerexport
Univerexport carries organic/health/vegan sub-ranges, but specific tofu availability varies by store size. The Organa organic line includes plant staples.
Dairy alternatives at Univerexport
Standard market brands are available (Alpro plant milk, etc.). Also noted by local guides, is that there is an offering of organic/no-gluten/vegan options. Currently we don’t have any information regarding vegan cheese options.
Meat alternatives at Univerexport
As with Maxi and Idea, we would rather not send you looking for specific mock meats here. The offer is thin and not well documented, and what turns up varies from store to store, so anything we listed might not be on the shelf when you arrive. If mock meats are what you are after, the larger stores are the ones worth trying, and we will update this section as the picture becomes clearer.
Vegan desserts and snacks at Univerexport
There are own-brand lines such as “Naše najbolje”, “Baš baš”, “Daj daj”) plus some posno-labelled sweets.
Apps and discounts
Univerexport runs a physical loyalty card, though for most shoppers it is probably of limited use. The weekly catalogue on the Univerexport website is the more practical way to catch discounts here, and the chain also runs an online shop with home delivery in Belgrade.
Well-regarded as a domestic chain with good fresh produce and a somewhat of a local tradition image. Prices are positioned as accessible.
We are roughly halfway through the guide at this point, so before we carry on with the rest of the supermarkets, one shop is worth a short detour.
dm
dm is not a supermarket like the others in this guide. It is a drugstore chain, so you will not find fresh produce, fresh bread, or a full grocery basket here. We are including it anyway, because in our experience it is one of the most reliable places in Belgrade for packaged vegan groceries, and it is genuinely easy to find.
dm has a dense network across the city, in shopping centres and on high streets, so there is usually one close by. Think of it as a top-up stop rather than a place to do a full shop.

Tofu and plant staples at dm
This is where dm earns its place on this list. Their dmBio organic range covers a genuinely useful vegan pantry: grains and pulses, mueslis, nut butters and almond-based spreads, olive oil, agave syrup, and less common grains like spelt, millet, quinoa, and amaranth.
Dairy alternatives at dm
dm carries Alpro plant drinks and desserts (soy, almond, oat, rice, coconut), dmBio soy products, Boom Box soy items, and even plant milk powder, with a dedicated section for milk substitutes.
Meat alternatives at dm
More limited, as this is not really where dm shines. You might find some items, but for a proper mock-meat shop you are better off elsewhere.
Vegan desserts and snacks at dm
A strong selection: dmBio chocolates, cereal and energy bars, nut mixes, dried fruit, matcha, and other organic sweets.
Apps and discounts
“Moj dm” is the chain’s loyalty app (iOS and Android). It gives you a digital loyalty card, points, and coupons that you activate in the app and scan in store or use in the online shop.
dm has a dedicated vegan section on its website, and among Belgrade vegans it is widely trusted as a dependable, good-value source of organic and plant-based staples, dairy alternatives, and snacks, as well as vegan cosmetics and toiletries. Its only real limitation is that it is not a full grocer, so treat it as a reliable companion to the supermarkets rather than a replacement for them.
Super Vero
Super Vero is a Greek-owned hypermarket chain, and the only one built around a wide range of Greek products. There are very few Vero supermarkets, but they are large. In Belgrade you will find one on Novi Beograd and one towards Konjarnik, as well as a few others. This is a destination hypermarket for a big shop, not a neighbourhood option you pop into.

Large produce sections, and the stores are generally well rated. As a hypermarket, it carries a broad fresh range.
Tofu and plant staples at Super Vero
Standard plant staples plus a Mediterranean streak from the Greek imports. Worth a browse if you like cooking with those flavours, though many of the Greek specialty items are dairy-based, so read labels carefully.
Dairy alternatives at Super Vero
Alpro plant milk is available, alongside the usual market brands.
Meat alternatives at Super Vero
This is Super Vero’s standout for plant-based shoppers. The chain stocks Beyond Meat, with pea-protein burgers and sausages, which is still hard to find in most Belgrade supermarkets. If Beyond Meat is what you are after, this is one of the more reliable places to look.

Greek and international sweets and snacks, with posno options among them.
Apps and discounts
“Super Vero” is the chain’s app (iOS and Android), tied to their loyalty programme. You get a digital loyalty card, points on your shopping, weekend bonus points, and vouchers you can redeem against future shops, plus promotions, shopping lists, and a store locator.
Well liked for its Greek imports and large-store quality, Super Vero is more of a special trip than an everyday shop. For plant-based shoppers, the Beyond Meat listing is the main reason to make that trip.
DIS
DIS is a domestic chain known for large-format stores, low prices, and a huge range of local products. In Belgrade it runs a number of DIS Market and Super DIS stores, but they are fewer and more spread out than Maxi or Idea. You go to DIS for a big stock-up rather than a corner top-up.

Limited and not a focus here. For mock meats, you are better off at one of the chains that curate them more deliberately.

Apps and discounts
“Naša aplikacija” is the DIS loyalty app (iOS and Android), which replaced the older plastic card. It uses loyalty points that reduce your future bills, plus stamps, personalised offers, purchase history, shopping lists etc.
DIS has a reputation for low prices and a big local assortment, which makes it a solid value-oriented stock-up chain. It is less known for curated plant-based ranges, so come here for staples and savings rather than specialist vegan finds.
Aman
Aman is a Belgrade-founded family chain whose slogan claims being a “good neighbour”, and that is exactly its character: a dense network of small neighbourhood shops across the city. It is handy for proximity and basics, but it is a convenience option rather than a place for a curated vegan shop.

Apps and discounts
We could not confirm a dedicated Aman loyalty or shopping app. Aman does run an online shop and publishes digital catalogues, and it offers delivery through Glovo, which is the easiest way to shop it without going in person.
Aman is best understood as a convenience-first neighbourhood chain. Its average quality, especially fresh produce, is on the lower side, so it is most useful for proximity and topping up on basics rather than for a proper plant-based shop.
Gomex
Gomex is a domestic chain based in Zrenjanin, strongest across Vojvodina but present in Belgrade too, with a modest number of stores. In the capital it is a secondary option rather than a chain you will find on every corner.

Apps and discounts
“Gomex” is the chain’s app (iOS and Android), tied to its loyalty programme. Points work at one dinar each, earned as you spend and redeemable once you reach a small minimum. There is a welcome coupon for your first app purchase, personalised coupons, and a choose-your-own-promotion feature, with coupons shareable by QR or link.
Gomex is regarded as a solid domestic value chain, at its strongest in Vojvodina. In Belgrade it is a secondary shop rather than a first port of call, useful if there is one near you but not worth a special trip for plant-based products.
Aroma
Aroma is a chain of mostly smaller stores concentrated in central Belgrade, across neighbourhoods like Stari Grad, Palilula, Vračar, and Savski Venac. Many branches work around the clock. Its appeal is central location and long hours rather than range or price.

Apps and discounts
We could not confirm a Serbian Aroma loyalty app. What Aroma offers instead is convenience: central locations and, in many branches, 24/7 opening.
Aroma is valued for being open when other shops are shut and for being right in the centre of town. The trade-off is price, as it is consistently described as more expensive than its rivals. Think of it as a late-night or last-minute top-up rather than a value or specialist-vegan destination.
Summary

If there is one thing to take away, it is that eating well as a vegan here is entirely possible, it just helps to know which shop to reach for.
Maxi and Idea for everyday convenience, Lidl for its own line, Idea Organic for staples, Super Vero if you are hunting Beyond Meat, and dm as a dependable top-up for pantry basics and dairy alternatives.
A word on accuracy as well – This is a living blog post, and we will update it often. Ranges shift with the seasons and with weekly promotions, products come and go, store formats change, and a small neighbourhood shop will never carry what a large hypermarket does.
